Less Than Zero

The San Jose, Calif., office of Integrated Design Associates (IDeAs) achieves net zero energy by keeping building loads to a minimum and using building-integrated photovoltaic panels to produce electricity. The electrical design firm transformed a 1960s-era concrete windowless bank building by adding energy-efficient lighting, a radiant heating/cooling slab, skylights, and windows, including an electrochromic window that automatically darkens when morning sunlight shines on it. Circuit-by-circuit monitoring allows the design team to conduct detailed analysis of energy use and identify opportunities for additional savings.
