Pushing the Envelope

A photovoltaics manufacturer needed a headquarters building that showcased innovative energy designs. The building’s unique prefabricated façade is made of wood, highly efficient glass and motorized shades that lower the cooling and heating loads indoors. A biogas CHP plant emits heat that is used in the winter for heating and used in the summer to operate an absorption chiller. In addition, PV systems generate about 258 MWh/year of solar electricity that is fed into the grid. The result is a building that is a net energy exporter while still providing good indoor environmental quality for occupants.
