Building that Breathes

Stanford University’s Jerry Yang and Akiko Yamazaki Environment and Energy Building (Y2E2) is the first element in Stanford’s new Science and Engineering Quad 2. Science buildings are challenging because of their typically high energy requirements. By using low velocity lab exhaust, multitasking fume hoods, active chilled beams and a natural ventilation system, Y2E2 consumed 50% less energy than similar campus laboratory buildings during its first year of operation. In addition, Y2E2 consumes only one-sixth of the water used by a similar laboratory building on campus.
