History's Keeper

The largest collection of Civil War artifacts and a cyclorama depicting the Battle of Gettysburg require carefully monitored indoor conditions. The Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, completed in 2008, took a decade of research and planning to achieve the preservation standards necessary while still being sustainable. Designers chose a geothermal system to provide long-term savings. Extensive dimming and control systems maintain lighting at optimum levels for visitors and artifacts. In addition, the project team used its experience in designing cold-storage facilities to create the optimum building to house the four-story tall cyclorama.
