California State University, Monterey Bay Tanimura and Antle Family Memorial Library: Monterey Bay, CA
Spreading the Word

The Tanimura and Antle Family Memorial Library is the academic hub for California State University Monterey Bay, which opened 12 years ago on the site of former military base Fort Ord. Classrooms, study nooks, collaborative study rooms, a café and a computer lab give library users a variety of settings to research and collaborate. The building, which also serves the community as a public library, reflects the campus' commitment to sustainability. A glass tower washes the central atrium in daylight, one of many design elements that contributes to the building's energy use intensity of 46 kBtu/ft2 • yr. Efficient and waterless bathroom fixtures, native landscaping and a drip irrigation system that responds to weather conditions help reduce water use.
