The Hurt Building in downtown Atlanta has survived almost 100 years of technical change and history to emerge as an example of energy efficiency and sustainability that rivals the best of its modern peers. The building still uses a chilled-water cooling system that was installed in 1956. A Web-based building management system has resulted in considerable utility savings, while low-flow plumbing retrofits and replacements led to a 27% reduction in water use in 2009 over 2008. The building's recycled furniture center offers tenants an alternative to buying new furniture or sending unwanted furniture to a landfill.
