Making the Case

Firing ranges, locker rooms, sally ports, jail cells, bunk rooms, and court rooms are just some of the special needs of a police and court building. These buildings are known for their high use of energy. But in Maplewood, N.J., the Police and Court Building has achieved LEED Silver certification by minimizing floor height using an innovative floor framing option, using daylighting in a building where operable windows are not allowed, and installing a 20 kW photovoltaic array.
