PNC Net Zero Bank Branch: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Banking on Net Zero

Solar panel canopies covering the ATM drive-through and pedestrian walkways at the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., PNC Bank branch are the first indication that this is no ordinary bank. The design team sought to reduce energy use by 50% compared to a code baseline building, targeting plug loads and lighting. LEDs drive down energy use in parking lot pole lights and the exterior bank sign. Computers are turned off remotely at night, but can be “woken” to receive software updates. The branch consumed less energy than predicted during its first year, successfully operating on a net zero energy basis.
