Design Methods for Sustainable Façades

Façades are one of the most significant contributors to the energy budget and the comfort parameters of any building. Design strategies for sustainable, high performance façades highly depend on the building's location and climate. This technical article examines two buildings that incorporate climate considerations into the design of high performance façades — one located in a mixed climate (Tacoma, Wash.), and one located in a hot climate (Dallas). Façade design strategies used in these buildings include operable windows, a variety of shading strategies (fixed and automated) and internal atriums.
